The city of New Rome is faced with a duel between Caesar Catiline, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after 30 hours of second-unit footage were filmed and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene from the script (p. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and only resumed development in 2019. At 9:40 PM, Catilina’s character utters the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” in astonishment. However, in-universe, the city of New Rome derives from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, a tribute to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The will of Kronos”; or 01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is visible, while there are many more images of Roman deities).

On the one hand, this film has some interesting ideas and visuals, but some of the ideas never develop, and some of the visuals don’t look good. It’s hard to understand what Coppola’s intention was with this film. It seems like he chose not to focus too much on the characters, but on the themes. However, some scenes suggest that the audience should feel empathy for the characters, but they just don’t.
If we strip away all the misleading character development, we’re left with misleading idea development
One reason for this is the pacing of this film; it somehow manages to move quickly, yet feels slow, and that could be because some of the scenes are dull. Megalopolis bombards you with interesting ideas, but because there are so many of them, none of them translate into a compelling conclusion. As I mentioned, it’s hard to see where Coppola is going with all of this. If his intention was to challenge the classic narrative structure and challenge the audience with a different kind of storytelling, then it just didn’t work. Some scenes are clichéd, and the overall structure feels like a mash-up of 1950s-90s scenes. One interesting thing the film does often is plant a seed that sometimes doesn’t grow—it stays in that scene, and then we move on to the next one.
