A serious theater director is tasked with remaking her former mentor’s most famous work, the opera Salome. Some disturbing memories from her past allow her repressed trauma to color the present. Here’s a fascinating and haunting Hawthorne story in which a father, a prominent avant-garde doctor, is fiercely protective of his daughter. As a child, he gradually introduces her to a deadly poisonous plant. By the time she reaches adulthood, anyone who gets too close to it will suffer and die. The plant’s poison is seeping into her lifeblood. The woman is beautiful and terrifying. "Don’t you love," he asks "that no one can bring you down?" Her answer cuts to the bone. “Father, I’d rather love someone.” Jeanine is a theater director who, like the woman in Hawthorne’s story, is trying to escape the shadow of heartless people. Abused by her father, mentor, husband, and now an arrogant actor – abuse they call “love” – Jeanine tries to heal and move beyond them without losing what is essential and good about her. She tries to escape the traps they have set for her. To find something else.” “Take one sense and the others are amplified.” I love Egoyan’s films for their depth, surprising twists, and exploration of interesting themes (passion, wrong judgments, abuse, trying to find a way forward after wrongs are done, love, perspectives different from my own, and more). Seven Veils continues to follow a woman torn apart by abuse in typical Egoyan vein. It’s set in the Canadian Opera Company building a few blocks from where I watched the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. While Egoyan spent a little too much time in the theater for my taste, I can see why he did it. Egoyan directed the opera company’s actual production of Salome and molded much of it into Seven Veils. Even some of the actors in the actual opera are in the film. Amanda Seyfried is skillfully brought to life as Jeanine. Off topic – why did Seyfried have surgery? Not that she looks like she does now. bad, but in Egoyan’s previous film Chloe looks much better. (long sigh) When I think about Seven Veils, I like it more. Overcoming the trauma of abuse is a fascinating topic. Someone who said they loved me hurt me a lot. Sometimes it’s a struggle to see myself as worthy of love. I see my own struggles in Jean’s.
